1. HAND WASH

If you'd prefer hand wash though, go with cold water and a gentle cleaning agent. When you can’t, or prefer not to, go to a professional cleaner. Fold and roll your suit jacket in preparation for the wash. Turn your suit jacket inside out. You should also fasten all buttons on the clothing.

We advise you not to do this on a regular basis, though, as such ingredients aren’t suitable for every fabric, and they can damage your suit in the long run. Remove your garment immediately to be air dried (and skip the dryer!).

2. WASHING MACHINE

Place each individual rolled garment into its own separate mesh washing bag. The bag should also be rolled up as tightly as possible and secured with safety pins as necessary.

Never use laundry detergent to wash your suit jacket. You can use a delicate baby shampoo. A gentle cleaning agent like wool and cashmere shampoo should be added to the drawer of the machine if you are washing wool suits, and soap flakes can be put directly into the drum of the machine if you’re washing non-woolen suits. The wash setting should be set to “Wool” or “Delicates” and washed at a cold temperature.

With each item in its original shape, gently roll the item up in the towel like a sleeping bag to remove some of the excess water. Wait a few seconds, unroll the towel, and then place the garments on a drying rack. Do not tumble dry.

3. DRY CLEANING

You can send all Versuitile apparels for dry clean services.

But here’s the thing, you don’t want to do it too often (not to do it more than once every two months). Dry-clean is a full-fledged cleaning. Instead of water, a chemical solvent is used to clean and sanitize your suit. In order to prevent a mismatched fading of the colours, it is also important to dry-clean trousers and jackets at the same time.

4. SPOT CLEANING

If you have a stain or a spot on your suit, it is possible to clean yourself. How you deal with this stain will depend on what stained your suit jacket. First, attempt to clean the stain by blotting with water. Using a clean washcloth or paper towel dipped in cool water, gently dab at the stain. If the stain hasn’t set, then this method may work well enough.

Spot clean small stains with lemon juice or distilled vinegar. Dab cold water onto your stain and a couple drops of lemon juice or distilled vinegar. Blot with a clean towel until the stain lifts.

5. USE A HANGER

The reason it’s important to use a WIDE HANGER, is that you want it to support the shoulders. A cedar wood coat hanger is the best choice, because it keeps your suit in shape, it soaks up humidity, and keeps moths away.

6. USE A GARMENT BAG

Don’t store it in a plastic bag, either. Opt for a breathable garment bag such that air can circulate.Leave the zipper slightly open. Your suit will be protected from moths, mites, mould, and dust, and you’ll be able to wear a clean suit, as fresh as if you had just collected it from the laundry!

7. USE A STEAMER

If you want to prolong the life of your suit, get a steamer! We would encourage STEAMING. The heat from the direct ironing can damage the fibers to the point that they create a shine after ironing, and not the type of shine that you might want. Steaming is just going to be a much more gentle method for removing wrinkles.

A vertical steamer is the best way to iron your suit. Steam is at 100°C and it is an excellent sterilizer. Most viruses and bacteria that survive high-temperature washings will be killed by steam.

If you have to use a traditional iron, MAKE SURE to always put a thin cloth between the iron and your suit’s fabric. The fabric will be protected from the high temperature of the iron, preventing that unrefined shiny look.

The last option is a special trick for people who travel a lot. Hang your suit in the bathroom, then open the hot water faucet and close the door. Thanks to the steam, creases on the suit will flatten out and your suit will soon regain its shape.

8. BRUSHING

30 seconds and a natural bristle brush is all you need in order to keep your garments clean and dry-clean them half as often. This simple trick removes dirt before it settles between the threads of the fabric.

You can find a nice and affordable lint roller from our website. You can also use a quality brush that is made of soft horsehair and all you do is give your suit a gentle brush after every other wear or so. Simply hang up your jacket and brush downwards (not across the fibers). Start at the top and work your way down. Better yet, have a friend bush it while you’re wearing it!

9. WHEN YOU TRAVEL

Place on top of your other luggage, and without any excessive compression, you should be OK. When you arrive at your final destination, the first thing you should do is to take out your suit and hang it up. Fine quality fabrics are likely to return to their normal lengths. You can also hang your suit up in the shower and give it a bit of a steam. And if you really, really, need some help, call up the concierge and have them give it a proper steam treatment.

With these washing and maintenance tips, you are sure to keep your suit in tip-top shape for years to come.
